What is backlight bleed?

Backlight bleed is uneven light leakage on dark content — distinct from IPS glow, vignette, and full-panel uniformity issues.

LCD backlight bleed

LCD panels use a full-array or edge backlight behind the liquid crystal layer. Imperfect sealing or pressure on the panel lets light escape at corners and edges on black — appearing as cloudy patches or bright spots on a backlight bleed test.

IPS glow explained

IPS glow is a viewing-angle effect — silvery or yellowish haze in corners that shifts when you move your head or tilt the monitor. It is a physical characteristic of IPS, not a defect. True bleed stays fixed in the same grid zones at every angle.

Clouding & flashlighting

VA and some IPS panels show clouding (large diffuse patches) or flashlighting (bright corners like a torch) on near-black content. Testing at 5–15% grey often reveals clouding that pure black masks — use multiple dark levels in this tool.

Mini LED & local dimming

Mini LED and FALD TVs use zones that can reduce traditional bleed but may show haloing around bright objects. A pure black fullscreen bleed test still matters on LCD monitors and laptops without aggressive dimming.

How to properly test for bleed

Environment and methodology significantly impact results — a backlight bleed test in daylight is meaningless; the same panel in a dark room tells the truth.

  1. Prepare dark room

    Turn off all room lights and close curtains. The darker the environment, the more accurate the results. Testing in bright daylight hides even severe bleed — manufacturers expect dark-room evaluation for returns. See also: Bleed by device .

IPS glow test

Often confused with bleed testing. An IPS glow check involves tilting the screen while displaying black — glow changes angle; bleed does not. Many 'backlight bleed test' searches are really glow-vs-bleed education.

Clouding test

Low-grey fields (5–20%) reveal large cloudy patches on VA TVs and some monitors. Clouding is a uniformity issue related to bleed but spread across wider areas than corner hotspots.

Panel lottery

LCD panel variance means two identical models can differ. Run a bleed test within the return window — photograph fixed corners with zone context if you plan to RMA.

Testing tips & pitfalls

Maximum brightness

Bleed is most visible at 100% brightness on black. Lower brightness for daily use later — test at max first for worst-case results.

No phone camera

Cameras amplify light sources — bleed looks worse in photos than to the naked eye. Judge with your eyes at normal viewing distance (50–70 cm for monitors).

Bias lighting

A dim bias light behind the monitor reduces perceived IPS glow during daily use but turn it off for an accurate bleed test.

When to return

Bright fixed hotspots in corners on static black that bother you at normal distance — not flaws only visible with your nose to the panel. Manufacturers often reject camera-only evidence.

Backlight bleed test FAQs

Do all LCD screens have backlight bleed?

100% uniformity is impossible for traditional LCD backlights — some corner glow or minor bleed is normal, especially on IPS. The question is whether it bothers you at normal viewing distance in a dark room.

How do I judge if bleed warrants a return?

If visible at your normal distance during real use (movies, dark UI), document it. Manufacturers often consider minor corner glow within spec. Fixed bright patches that persist at every angle are stronger RMA cases.

Are phone photos of bleed accurate?

No — cameras amplify light. A phone photo in a dark room makes bleed look far worse than your eyes see. Use photos as supplementary evidence only; judge primarily with your eyes.

Can IPS glow be eliminated?

No — it is a physical characteristic of IPS panels. You can reduce perceived glow with lower brightness, better viewing angle, or bias lighting, but you cannot remove it entirely.

How does Mini LED relate to backlight bleed?

Mini LED local dimming reduces traditional full-backlight bleed on dark scenes but can introduce haloing around bright objects. Classic corner bleed tests still apply to monitors and laptops without aggressive zone dimming.

Will screen calibration fix bleed?
