What to listen for

Reversed L/R channels

Left test audio plays from the right speaker (or vice versa). Fix by swapping positive/negative pairs at one speaker only if polarity is correct, or swap L/R inputs at the amp. Re-run the left right speaker test after each change.

No bass below 80 Hz

Bookshelf, monitor, and phone speakers often cannot reproduce deep sub-bass — a normal roll-off, not always a defect. If bass vanishes only when both channels play, suspect phase cancellation instead of driver size.

Cabinet rattling

Buzzing during the sub-bass or sweep tests usually means loose screws, a vibrating grille, or objects on the desk touching the enclosure. Isolate the frequency where rattle starts, then tighten hardware or add dampening.

Thin, bass-less sound

Out-of-phase speakers subtract low end — music sounds distant or mono-heavy off-axis. Run the phase test in both modes; if out-of-phase matches what you hear daily, flip wiring on one driver and test again.

Equal distance from listening position

Form an equilateral triangle between your head and the two speakers — typically 1–1.5 m sides for desk monitors. Uneven distance skews the stereo image even when L/R wiring is correct.

Tweeters at ear height, angled inward

Point tweeters toward your ears, not straight across the room. A few degrees of toe-in tightens the center image for music and games.

Keep away from walls to reduce boom

Front-ported or rear-ported speakers can build up bass near walls. Pull speakers forward 30–60 cm if low end sounds boomy after a clean sweep test.

Match volume before comparing channels

OS balance sliders should stay centered during L/R tests. If one side is quieter at the same setting, suspect driver damage or amp channel imbalance — not just panning.

What is a speaker phase test?

Phase test plays the same pink noise in both channels (in-phase) or inverts one channel (out-of-phase). In-phase should sound centered with full bass; out-of-phase sounds hollow and thin — if daily listening matches out-of-phase, flip wiring on one speaker.

Why is there no bass during the sweep?

Small speakers and many laptop drivers roll off below 60–100 Hz. Sub-bass mode targets 40–100 Hz — if you hear nothing, try larger speakers or a subwoofer. Silence on large speakers may indicate high-pass filtering or a missing sub channel.

How is this different from testing speaker wire with a multimeter?
