What this flicker test covers (and what it does not)

A consumer flicker test for displays measures visible PWM or drive instability on a screen. Searchers also use “flicker test” for EMC power quality, medical vision labs, psychology CFF tasks, and audio/video pattern discs — those are different tools.

PWM backlight flicker

Pulse-width modulation dims LEDs by switching them on and off. At low brightness the off time grows, so a PWM flicker test often shows shimmer, banding, or camera banding that a bright setting hides.

Monitor vs VRR flicker

A monitor flicker test / flicker test monitor pass usually tracks brightness. A VRR flicker test feeling in games often tracks frame-time swings (G-Sync / FreeSync) — confirm with fixed refresh and a tearing or Hz check.

Not EMC, medical, or Dolby lab gear

How to run a screen flicker test online

  1. Dim and prepare the room

    Set brightness low (often 20–40%). Turn off strong ambient light so room lamp flicker does not mask a screen flicker test. Keep this tab focused so the browser timer stays accurate. See also: refresh rate test .

    Visible pulse that grows at low brightness points to PWM on a flicker test monitor check. Try OSD flicker-free / DC dimming, higher brightness, or a different cable/GPU path. PWM, VRR, EMC & other “flicker test” meanings

PWM vs DC dimming

DC dimming reduces current without hard on/off cycles — a steady image on a monitor flicker test. PWM uses duty cycle; cheaper panels often sit in the audible or visible band at low brightness.

VRR flicker

G-Sync / FreeSync / HDMI VRR can brighten or flash when frame time jumps. A VRR flicker test feeling during games is different from a PWM flicker test — try fixed refresh, then retest.

EMC & harmonics flicker systems

An EMC flicker test or harmonics & flicker test system measures voltage fluctuations and Pst/Plt on the power grid (IEC 61000-style benches). That lab gear does not evaluate your laptop backlight — and this page cannot replace it.

Medical, eye & psychology tests

A flicker test medical, eye flicker test, or flicker test psychology task measures critical flicker fusion with calibrated light sources. Use a clinic or lab protocol for those — not a consumer screen flicker test.

When to use this flickering test

Laptop at night

  • Lower brightness until text is readable.
  • Run grey pulse first — soft PWM shows up here.
  • If pulse vanishes above ~60% brightness, PWM is likely.

Recommended Prefer DC dimming or high-frequency PWM laptops if you work in dim rooms.

Gaming monitor / VRR

  • Test with VRR on, then off at fixed Hz.
  • PWM flicker stays with brightness; VRR flicker tracks FPS swings.
  • Pair with tearing and refresh rate tools for the full picture.

Recommended If only games flash during FPS dips, tune VRR / frame limit before blaming backlight PWM.

OLED TV or phone

  • Use grey pulse at low brightness for OLED PWM checks.
  • Fullscreen white may trigger ABL — not the same as PWM.
  • Phone cameras often reveal banding from OLED drive.

Why does my OLED flicker at low brightness?
