How to run a monitor viewing angle test

  1. Baseline straight-on

Which patterns to use in a screen viewing angle test

Grey ramps

Horizontal and vertical black-to-white ramps show gamma and brightness roll-off off-axis. They are the first patterns to run in any LCD viewing angle test.

Mid grey & nine-zone grid

A flat grey field should stay uniform. If zones tint differently when you tilt, the panel is shifting white point — common on wide IPS monitors viewed from below.

Skin tone & color bars

Flesh tones and SMPTE-style bars mimic video content. Use them for TV seating checks where subtle hue errors matter more than raw contrast specs.

Fine checkerboard

When checker squares merge into grey off-axis, contrast has collapsed. Helpful for judging whether a VA panel is acceptable from a corner seat.
