Short answer: Display 50% grey in fullscreen, then white and black in a dark room. Move your eyes across the panel and note corners or patches that look brighter, darker, or warmer than the rest.
Uniformity problems rarely show up in spreadsheets or games. A flat field is the honest test.
Symptoms you are looking for
- Vignetting: edges darker than the middle (common on IPS desktop panels)
- Backlight bleed: cloudy glow near corners on black (often laptops)
- Color shift: whites look yellow in one zone, blue in another
- Banding: visible steps in smooth gradients instead of a fade
Best test colors
Mid grey (start here)
50% grey balances highlight and shadow detail. It is the industry-standard quick check for uneven backlight.
Use the grey screen tool fullscreen and trace an “S” pattern with your eyes — center, corners, edges.
White (backlight stress)
Full white pushes the backlight hardest. Large monitors sometimes show brighter centers or dim corners here even when grey looked fine.
Black (bleed and leak)
Turn off overhead lights. Black fullscreen reveals light leaking around hinges on laptops or pressure spots from case flex.
Six-step uniformity routine
- Set brightness to 50–70% — max brightness can mask issues.
- Disable dynamic contrast and aggressive local dimming in monitor menus.
- Open grey fullscreen for 60 seconds.
- Repeat on white and black.
- Tilt the lid slightly (laptops) — some bleed only appears at certain angles.
- Note whether flaws appear in daily use or only on test patterns.
Banding vs panel defects
Vertical bands on a brightness ramp may be GPU settings, cable quality, or the panel itself. The brightness gradient test helps separate banding from random clouding.
Is it bad enough to return?
Mild corner shading on IPS displays is normal. Warranty teams usually care when:
- The uneven area is obvious in normal content
- One side has a strong color cast on neutral grey
- Bleed covers more than a small corner on dark movies
Photograph the test color fullscreen with room lights off.
